NGO Insurance

Member-facing summary of the Public Liability insurance benefit

As part of NGO membership, members benefit from Public Liability insurance arranged for members of the National Gamekeepers' Organisation. The cover is intended to support members where they may become legally liable for injury to another person or damage to third-party property while taking part in lawfully recognised gamekeeping, shooting or field sport activities endorsed by the NGO.

This summary is intended to help members understand why the insurance benefit is particularly relevant to gamekeepers and those involved in shooting-related activities. It is not a substitute for the policy wording, schedule, IPID or verification of insurance.

Key point: the NGO cover is especially relevant because it is arranged around lawfully recognised gamekeeping, shooting and field sport activities, including occupational and/or recreational activities, subject to the policy terms.

How this compares with other shooting membership insurance

Other shooting organisations may also provide valuable insurance benefits for members. The important distinction for NGO members is that the NGO cover has been arranged with gamekeepers and shooting-related work in mind, including activities that may be occupational as well as recreational.

Comparison point NGO member insurance BASC member insurance Member-facing comment
Membership cost NGO Gamekeeper Membership is shown at £55 per year. BASC Gamekeeper Membership is shown at £88 per year. NGO is materially cheaper for the comparable gamekeeper category.
Public Liability limit £10,000,000. £10,000,000. The headline Public Liability limit is broadly equal.
Core activity basis Lawfully recognised gamekeeping, shooting and field sport activities, including occupational and/or recreational activities. BASC standard member insurance is framed around recreational country pursuits; BASC also offers separate professional cover for shooting professionals. NGO is especially relevant for working gamekeepers and members undertaking occupational shooting-related activities.
Pest control Included, but poisons are excluded. Recreational pest/predator control is included; professional activity may require separate cover. NGO is more directly aligned to members whose pest control forms part of their work.
Deer management and stalking Deer management, stalking, tracking wounded deer with dogs and controlled deer culling are included, subject to policy terms. Recreational deer stalking is included; professional deer management may require separate cover. NGO is more directly relevant to occupational deer work.
Syndicates Included where each individual syndicate member is an NGO member. Cover follows the insured individual, subject to policy terms. BASC also recognises club and syndicate arrangements. Both recognise syndicates; the practical exposure relates to insured individuals.
Dog-related liability Dogs are not insured as property. Liability caused by a member’s dog may be covered, subject to the applicable excess. BASC includes certain gundog-related liability benefits, subject to its policy wording. Both should be explained as liability cover, not insurance for the dog itself.
Territorial scope Public and Products Liability applies worldwide excluding USA and Canada for occupational and recreational purposes. BASC states worldwide cover excluding North America/Canada, with restrictions. Broadly comparable for overseas use, subject to each policy wording.
Personal Accident Not included. BASC Gamekeeper Membership advertises 24/7 personal accident cover up to £50,000. BASC has an advantage on Personal Accident.

Why this matters to gamekeepers

  • Gamekeeping and shooting-related activities are not always purely recreational. Many members carry out activities connected with their work, duties or livelihood.

  • The NGO cover is expressly built around lawfully recognised gamekeeping and field sport activities endorsed by the NGO.

  • The cover can therefore be particularly relevant for members who beat, load, pick up, undertake pest control, manage deer, stalk, train dogs, fish or take part in other recognised activities as part of their countryside role.

  • NGO membership also offers this insurance benefit at a competitive membership cost.
