From 24 September, a new rule will come into force under the making it illegal to own a “zombie-style” knife or machete. They are being added to the list of dangerous prohibited items already banned under the Offensive Weapons Act.
The new law will also cover their manufacture, importation, supply and sale.
This change to the law is aimed at removing these so-called ‘statement knives’ from our streets and from the hands of criminal gangs. However, some knives used by land managers and keepers for vegetation management and conservation activities could potentially fall into the new criteria.
The zombie knives which will be banned are defined as follows:
A zombie style knife is a bladed weapon with:
· A plain cutting edge
· A sharp pointed end, and
· A blade of over eight inches long
Which also has one or more of the following:
· A serrated cutting edge over two inches long
· More than one hole in the blade
· Spikes
· More than two sharp points in the blade
We would urge all members to double check that no knives they either own, use or make fit into the above category. It is worth bearing in mind as well that any conviction for owning an illegal knife would likely have ramifications on any firearms or shotgun licences. It is your responsibility to ensure you are aware of these changes to the law and whether any weapon in your possession has the prohibited characteristics.
David Pooler, Chairman of the NGO said: “With the change of laws regarding zombie knives and machetes, all must follow the law. As a keeper myself I am fully aware that many of us will have legitimate uses for a machete, but you must check that the knife you use fits the new guidelines and it still legal. Ensure that you only carry it when you intend to use it, so that if you happen to be challenged, you have a reasonable excuse as to why you have it on your person.”
If you do own a knife or machete which fits into the banned category, you can surrender it at a police station between 26 August and 23 September 2024. You may also be able to claim compensation for the loss of your knife.
Further information and documents can be found at the following government link. This document may also be useful for anyone who is unsure whether their knife or machete will qualify for compensation.
