Bluetongue control zones are currently in place in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and in parts of Kent and Greater London. There is also an extended temporary control zone in the East Riding of Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire

Since August, there have been increasing cases of bluetongue virus (BTV-3) in England, particularly the south and east. As of today (Monday 16 September) the total number of premises affected is 56.

Bluetongue control zones are currently in place in Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex, and in parts of Kent and Greater London. There is also an extended temporary control zone in the East Riding of Yorkshire and North East Lincolnshire. However, these areas affected are of course subject to change as the disease spreads or dies down.

Bluetongue is a viral disease affecting deer and other ruminants, including cattle and sheep. Deer can act as a reservoir for the bluetongue virus, potentially spreading it to domestic livestock. This risk is especially relevant near farms and managed herds.

Cases of bluetongue virus in England do, therefore, have significant implications for deer management.

In zones where bluetongue has been detected, the movement of live deer is restricted. There are however currently no restrictions on moving carcasses between any zones.

Bluetongue is a notifiable disease. If you suspect an infection in deer or any other animal, you must report it immediately. Failure to report it is illegal. Contact details for Defra/APHA are:

 England: 03000 200 301

 Wales: 03003 038 268

We would urge any members involved with deer management to check for updates on the bluetongue situation in affected areas regularly, and adhere to any new guidelines issued by authorities. Visit the dedicated Defra area on their website and the APHA site for the latest updates on bluetongue.
