The Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust is creating a gallery of the tweeds worn across the gamekeeping community, and they need your help.
The charity is asking gamekeepers, stalkers, riverkeepers and all those in gamekeeping professions to send a square sample of their tweed, or a close-up photo, to be included initially in an online gallery. The charity plan to update the gallery annually, but longer term they plan to create a tweed quilt for display.
CEO Helen Benson says “Tweed is such an iconic material for the gamekeeping family. It’s been the hardy, practical stuff of working life for many years. When we think of estate tweed, it’s also a visual symbol of belonging to the land and the community of people living and working on it. We’ve had a positive response to our request on social media, but we’d love to see more coming in. With textile technology improving all the time, tweed isn’t always the first choice now. We want to create a tweed quilt so we have a tangible piece of our history for the future”.
The charity are aware not everyone may be able to send a sample, so are happy to accept details of your tailor who may be able to provide one, or a photograph.
To donate, please send a square sample of your tweed, or a good quality photograph of it, with the name of your estate, shoot, or river beat, to The Gamekeepers’ Welfare Trust, Keeper’s Cottage, Tanfield Lodge, West Tanfield, Ripon, North Yorkshire, HG4 5LE. Or email enquiries@thegamekeeperswelfaretrust.com
