Natural Resources Wales have voted in favour of a motion that would prevent the public from controlling magpies, jays or jackdaws in order to protect wild birds.
At their board meeting last week, Natural Resources Wales voted in favour of a motion that would prevent the public from controlling magpies, jays or jackdaws in order to protect wild birds.
The changes that the board voted for are to GL04, the General Licence for Conservation.
We wrote to board members before their meeting, spelling out our concerns with their proposed changes. Our letter included on-the-ground anecdotes from keepers in Wales, who were concerned that the proposed changes would leave more vulnerable species, including many red and amber listed birds, in danger of predation. You can read our full letter to board members here.
Despite our warnings and those of numerous otherwise rural organisations, the NRW board voted in favour of the proposed General Licence changes, by 6 votes to 3. NRW have pledged to introduce individual licences, however the NGO do not believe that this is a satisfactory compromise,
The NGO believe that this is a backwards step for conservation and biodiversity in Wales, and are considering our next steps.
