The National Gamekeepers’ Organisation are saddened and hugely disappointed to read of this case, and we would encourage anyone who might have any further information to contact North Yorkshire Police as soon as possible
Today, Natural England and North Yorkshire Police have released details of a case of suspected raptor persecution. It is believed that in June of this year, four young hen harrier chicks were deliberately killed in their nest through human interference.
The police are appealing for information surrounding the deaths of the chicks, which happened in the Yorkshire Dales National Park. The full police account of the case can be read on the North Yorkshire Police website, here: https://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/news/north-yorkshire/news/appeals/2022/12-december/hen-harrier-nest-investigation---police-appeal-for-information/
The National Gamekeepers’ Organisation are saddened and hugely disappointed to read of this case, and the specific details which the police investigation have revealed. We would encourage anyone who has any information which might help North Yorkshire Police with their investigations to contact them as soon as possible.
This incident is hugely upsetting for us as it undermines the excellent work being carried out by gamekeepers and land managers across the uplands to increase hen harrier numbers, including helping and supporting Defra’s joint action plan for hen harrier recovery.
The National Gamekeepers' Organisation are members of The Yorkshire Dales Bird of Prey Partnership. Our joint reaction to the incident can be found here.
