The National Gamekeepers’ Organisation (NGO) have produced a Deer Management Strategy for England, in conjunction with professional deer managers and vocational deer stalkers in England
Wild deer in England are an important part of our culture and history. However, land use changes and the creation of more woodland coverage have contributed to an increased deer population over the last century. In addition, the government has committed to increase England’s woodland cover and tree canopy cover to 16.5% by 2050 – but within this target, the deer population will have an impact on its feasibility.
With all of the above in mind, the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation (NGO) have produced a Deer Management Strategy for England, in conjunction with professional deer managers and vocational deer stalkers in England.
The document has been sent to politicians, decision makers and NGOs with the intention of helping government and other NGOs to create a more joined-up and sustainably managed deer herd in England. The aim is also to discuss ideas that are suited to helping the private sector to deliver on the government's aims, and will help government to progress towards their stated aim of increased biodiversity and interconnected woodlands in the near future.
This Deer Management Strategy will contribute to an increased deer cull in areas where it is most needed and an expansion of the venison market in the UK.
Our NGO deer branch members should also have received a copy of the strategy via email. However, if you would like a PDF or print copy sent to you, please contact the NGO office on 01833 660 869 or email info@nationalgamekeepers.org.uk.
