For nine years retired gamekeeper Brian Hayes and his wife Yvonne have travelled the length and breadth of the country to educate children and adults about the benefits of gamekeeping. However, the retired keeper, now in his 74th year, has announced that next year will be stepping down from his roadshow work, though he will remain as Trust Administrator for the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation Educational Trust (NGOET).

Speaking at a school event in Shropshire, the Trust Administrator Mr Hayes said: ‘It is absolutely vital that this roadshow work continues into the future. The sporting world is very good at talking to itself but we’ve got to speak to people who are not on-side. Events like BBC Countryfile are vital for getting our message out and are absolutely where we should be.’

As well as talking to thousands of children and adults face to face, the other great achievement of the NGOET has been the creation of a full range of professional educational resources for teachers which are downloadable free of charge from the Times Educational Supplement website, a go-to portal for that nation’s educators.

The NGO Educational Trust (NGOET) was established in 1999 and is funded entirely by donations, including an annual donation from the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation.

Speaking about the future of the Trust, trustee and vice chair of the National Gamekeepers’ Organisation Geoff Garrod said: ‘ As keepers we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Brian and Yvonne for their tireless commitment to the Trust since its inception. As trustees we must ensure that the roadshow work continues and that funds are in place to find a new face of the Trust to hit the roads and to continue to support and expand on its vital educational work into the future.’

Editors notes

The National Gamekeepers' Organisation Educational Trust is Registered Charity number 1076923. As the name suggests, its founding body was the National Gamekeepers' Organisation (NGO). But the NGO Educational Trust is an independent charity, with separate Trustees who are bound by the Charity Commission to conduct their work in a balanced and factual manner.
