A compact disc on The Gamekeeper's Role in Sustainable Countryside Management is now being sent to primary school head teachers in Wales. Available to download free from www.gamekeeperstrust.org.uk, the CD-Rom's bilingual content highlights proven conservation strategies that have been shown to be effective in nurturing Welsh wildlife.
The course work has been designed as a complete teaching pack for use with children in the 9-13 age range. The teaching material and CD-Rom are produced by the National Gamekeepers' Organisation Educational Trust. (English and Welsh language versions of the news release were issued to the press.)
The bilingual CD - Rom, a handy classroom teaching aid, holds teaching notes, five separate pupil worksheets and a PowerPoint presentation on the conservation work of gamekeepers in retaining and enhancing the biodiversity of the Welsh countryside. It links to the Welsh curriculum Key Stages 2 and 3, covering aspects of geography, science and PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education).
Brian Hayes of the National Gamekeepers' Organisation Educational Trust said: "Wildlife today faces many challenges, so it is important that children gain a rounded view of conservation. It is crucial children learn from a young age how to do their best to conserve and enhance the countryside's flora and fauna. The importance of gamekeeping in benefiting conservation for everyone is widely documented by respected wildlife scientists in the scientific literature."
Mr Hayes added: "Gamekeepers live close to nature and want to share their love of the natural world with others, especially children, the adults of tomorrow. We have produced the CD - Rom because surveys show that 49 out of every 50 members of the public have never met a gamekeeper face-to-face. Hopefully, it will enable youngsters to gain a better insight into why the countryside is so special to us all. I really hope the children and the teachers enjoy the CD - Rom."
The content of the CD -Rom is available to download free of charge from www.gamekeeperstrust.org.uk or by calling 01833 660869.
Notes to Editors
The CD - Rom is going out to primary school headteachers in Gwent, Pembrokeshire and Powys. It has already been sent to school in Anglesey, Ceredigion and Gwynedd and will eventually, as funds permit, be rolled-out to all schools across Wales.
