The NGO is taking bookings for its 147th game meat handling course, to be held in West Warwickshire on May 31st.
The NGO course is the only game meat handling course run in the UK for the public which covers both small and large game meat hygiene, from field to larder. It is open to both members and non-members and participants receive a certificate and credit card style proof of completion. The goal of the course is to achieve food safety. The qualification is a legal requirement for selling to gamedealers in the UK and so is essential for gamekeepers and stalkers who sell to game handling establishments. The course has a short multiple choice test at the end of the day to ensure competency and is certified by both the Food Standards Agency and the NGO.
The one day course will be run by Alan Barrell, vice chairman of the NGO Deer Branch, NGO firearms officers and trained slaughterman and will cost £100 + VAT. Speaking about the course, Alan Barrell said: 'This course was first developed by NGO founding member Eddie Graves in 2004 who recognised the need for all game entering the food chain to be inspected as fit for human consumption. These courses attract people of all ages who may be new to the industry or who have yet to do the course. We look forward to welcoming them all.'
The NGO have to date run 146 game meat handling courses across England and Wales and to date 3,194 people have received their trained hunter ID as a result.
Places on the course are limited. Those interested in booking should contact the NGO office on (01833) 660869 or email info@nationalgamekeepers.org.uk
